The Summit Area YMCA has basketball programs for all ages and levels. We teach the basic skills and rules of the sport, while also focusing on the important values of sportsmanship, teamwork and more. Join a clinic and improve your skills, join a league to compete and unleash the basketball star inside you or shoot some hoops and enjoy a friendly game with other members during open gym!


Youth BASKETBALL CLINICS

Designed for players to develop and fine tune their fundamental basketball skills while learning teamwork and strategy. Participants will focus on game rules, shooting, passing, ball handling, offensive and defensive skills. Players will also learn offensive and defensive skills like rebounding and strategy.

PEE WEE BASKETBALL

Pee Wee Basketball is for co-ed youth ages 4-6 to learn the fundamentals of basketball, make new friends, grow self-confidence and more, in a safe and fun environment. In this age group, our coaches place emphasis on structured drills and fun games.

TRAVEL BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Participation in our Travel Basketball League Team is based on an invitation from players tryout performance. Team tryouts are held in October. League runs November to March. The Summit Area YMCA Travel Basketball League Teams are co-ed: Youth (ages 9-11) and Teen (ages 12-14). Our teams compete against local YMCAs and other youth leagues at Hoop Heaven. In this age group, our coaches place emphasis on advanced skills, positive competition & teamwork.

Join our upcoming 6-week training clinic at the Summit YMCA and prepare for your place on our Travel Basketball Team. Learn from the best, YMCA basketball veterans and last year’s championship winning coaches Kareem Douglas & Toni Harrell! Players will focus on shooting, passing, ball handling, play routes, offensive and defensive skills.

Private YOUTH BASKETBALL TRAINING

We also offer private and small group basketball training sessions that provides your child with one-on-one personalized attention with our skilled basketball instructors. Our private basketball training sessions provide participants personalized attention from our skilled basketball instructors in a small group setting. Training is based on each participants accessed skill level to further develop shooting, ball handling, speed, strategy, team play, offensive and defensive skills. Dates and times are scheduled individually per student.

ADULT BASKETBALL

The Summit Area YMCA offers multiple sessions every week exclusively for Adult Basketball. Enjoy a few pickup games with friends or run some training drills on your own. We also host open gym at least twice a day, so you can enjoy hours of basketball, volleyball, soccer and more - everyday!

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The Summit Area YMCA works side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, income and background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Each year, we serve more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services, through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners. Families with low or moderate household income or those who are experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to apply. Applicants must live or work in the Summit Area YMCA service area which includes Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Financial assistance can be used for membership, child care, summer camp, enrichment and sports programs where additional fees apply, such as soccer and swimming lessons.

We'd love to have you! The Summit Area YMCA is a cause-driven, volunteer-led organization. Our volunteers are advocates for a better tomorrow. We view them as shining examples of social responsibility selflessly sharing their time, talent and treasure to advance the Y’s cause and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families locally.

All interested volunteers will be asked to fill out an application. Once your application is received, it will be forwarded to the Branch Volunteer Coordinator at your preferred location who will contact you within 48 hours to discuss your interests and schedule an interview. To ensure the highest level of safety for our members and children, we are very careful with our employee and volunteer selection. Most volunteer positions will require your completion of new volunteer paperwork and online training, along with reference checks and your approval for a criminal background check. ACCESS ID CARDS

If you are entering the Y to pick-up or drop-off a program participant and are not a Y member, you’ll need an access ID card. Access ID cards are issued individually and are not transferrable. To receive your access ID card and take your photo, visit the membership desk of the Berkeley Heights YMCA or Summit YMCA. A government issued photo ID must be presented for anyone over the age of 18. Prior to entering any YMCA facility, all visitors must complete our participation waiver online at www.thesay.org/waiver.
