For a child, a familiar face at the start or end of the school day can make all the difference. Someone who knows their name, encourages them to try something new, and makes them feel welcome. At the Summit Area YMCA, childcare staff have the opportunity to be that person, and to build skills, relationships, and a future of their own along the way.
The Y is welcoming caring, dependable people to its childcare team, with a particular need for before and afterschool counselors at elementary school sites in Berkeley Heights and New Providence. Opportunities also include program leadership and full-time roles caring for infants and toddlers.
Through games, crafts, sports, STEM activities, and homework support, before and afterschool counselors help children build friendships, discover interests, and develop confidence. For working families, these programs provide the reassurance of knowing their children are safe, supported, and engaged beyond the classroom.
For someone beginning a career, that work offers experience in communication, teamwork, leadership, and child development. For those exploring a new direction or purposeful work after retirement, it offers a way to share their skills and build connections in their community. Experienced childcare professionals can find opportunities to lead programs and support fellow educators.
Many Summit Area YMCA staff members have stayed with the organization for years, developing lasting relationships with colleagues and the families they serve. That sense of connection reflects the Y’s commitment to a welcoming workplace where people of different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives can contribute and grow.
Supporting children takes skill, care, and continued learning. The Summit Area YMCA provides paid training, professional development, and opportunities for advancement, along with CPR, AED, and First Aid certification training. These experiences help employees grow as leaders both inside and outside the Y.
Education pathways offer another avenue for growth. Through a partnership between the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance and the New Jersey Council of County Colleges, individuals can connect with all 18 of New Jersey’s public community colleges for help exploring degrees, career credentials, and new skills. Dedicated contacts provide guidance with enrollment, financial aid, and career planning, with tuition-free opportunities available to eligible residents and additional assistance available based on eligibility.
Part-time YMCA employees also receive a free individual membership, discounted family membership, and a 12% YMCA Retirement Fund contribution upon eligibility. Benefits vary by position and employment status.
Before and afterschool counselor positions pay $17.50–$20 per hour, based on experience. Applicants may apply for one or both shifts:
Programs follow the local school calendar, with potential opportunities to work Holiday Care during school breaks. Experience working with children is preferred for counselor roles, along with patience, dependability, enthusiasm, and a commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment.
The Y is also hiring an Afterschool Site Coordinator, a full-time School Age Childcare & Camp Director, and full-time Toddler Teacher and Infant Caregiver positions at The Learning Circle YMCA in Summit.
Whether helping a child feel included, supporting a family’s daily routine, or guiding a team of educators, YMCA employees contribute to a stronger community through their everyday work.
