Remembering Our History: A community Celebration of Freedom & Culture

Our annual Juneteenth celebration brings together families, neighbors, and community partners for an evening of inspiring speakers, interactive activities, and live performances. From Double Dutch to Zumba, shared stories to shared meals, this is a night that honors the past and invests in the future. The pool opens early, the food trucks roll in, and the community shows up. All are welcome.

2026 Recap

Last year, we hosted our first-ever Juneteenth celebration at the Berkeley Heights YMCA.  This year, the community came back and made it even bigger.
On June 19, 2026, families started arriving at 4pm as the pool opened, and the energy built from there. By the time the evening’s program got underway at 5pm the celebration was full of life: inspiring speakers, interactive activities, and performances that had everyone moving  including a slam poetry performance, Zumba with Jacquetta, and a showstopping set from Double Dutch Lyfe that brought out kids and adults alike.
Urban Burger and Urban Cone kept everyone fed, and our generous sponsors made the whole night possible.
One attendee summed it up: “So thoughtfully conceived and beautifully executed. It was wonderful to see so many young members attending, learning and participating.”
That’s exactly what this night is for. Thank you to everyone who came, celebrated, and helped carry this tradition forward.
We’ll see you next June.

What is Juneteenth and Why Does it Matter?

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marks June 19, 1865—the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free the last enslaved African Americans. This was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation.

Recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth is a celebration of resilience, progress, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

“Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. Instead, it’s a celebration of progress.”
– President Barack Obama (White House)

Despite progress, racial disparities persist. A report from the Brookings Institute found that Black Americans continue to face income inequality, lower homeownership rates, and health disparities (Brookings Institute).

Juneteenth is not just about history—it’s about moving forward. Events like this create opportunities for education, engagement, and community-building to work toward a more just and equitable future.
