Celebrating 182 Years of Community: Happy Founder’s Day

On June 6, 1844, a small group of young people gathered in London with one goal in mind: to create a safe, supportive place for people to grow in spirit, mind, and body. That vision became the YMCA — now 182 years strong worldwide, 175 years in America, and for the past 140 years, right here in Summit.

Our Local Legacy

The Summit Area YMCA has been part of this community since 1886, long before fitness centers were on every corner and long before “wellness” was a buzzword. Back then, it was simply about giving people a place to belong.

It started with Sunday meetings at a corner store on Springfield and Morris Ave. Within a year, the Y had outgrown a rented cottage. By 1893, they’d built a permanent home at 399 Springfield Ave — a building that cost nearly $20,000 and had a gym whose floors could be removed to become a pool in the summertime. Not bad for 1893.

Over 140 years, that spirit of making it work has looked a lot of different ways. Childcare for working families. Youth mentorship programs. A second location in Berkeley Heights. The faces and the programs have changed, but the mission hasn’t — strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Honoring the Past Through Our Future

At the Summit Area YMCA, we’re proud to carry on a legacy that started in 1886. From swim lessons and summer camps to wellness programs, early childhood education, and spaces to gather and connect, the Y has always been about more than a building. It’s about the people inside it.

As we celebrate Founder’s Day, we honor the generations of staff, volunteers, members, and supporters who have made our work possible. Your commitment keeps our mission alive — and ensures that everyone in our community, regardless of background or income, has a place to grow.
