This summer, 13 students from the Summit Area YMCA Achievers Program reached an exciting milestone by taking the program’s first-ever college tour by airplane. For many students, it was also their first time visiting Florida and Miami, making the trip an unforgettable experience.
During this tour, students visited four colleges and universities:
At Florida Memorial University, those who play basketball for Summit High School joined basketball coach Anthony Anderson for drills on the court. Students also met Olympic medalist and track coach Dwayne Miller, who shared advice about working hard, setting goals, and preparing for the future.
Students also connected with former Achievers student Jourdan Banks, a 2018 Summit High School graduate who is scheduled to earn her doctorate from Florida International University in December 2026. She shared her college journey and encouraged students to believe in themselves and keep reaching for their goals.
In addition to visiting colleges, students explored Miami by enjoying the FIFA World Cup atmosphere at Bayside Marketplace and Bayfront Park, visiting the Frost Museum of Science, Fun Dimension, Boca Raton, and Little Havana. They also tried local restaurants, relaxed at the hotel pool, and made lasting memories together.
The Achievers Summer College Tour gives students the chance to explore colleges, meet inspiring mentors, experience new places, and prepare for their future.
