LEARN ENGLISH WITH CONFIDENCE

ESL (English as a Second Language) classes help non-native speakers of all ages and levels to learn both the formal grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation of spoken and written English while giving them confidence in the common usage of the language in order to communicate clearly and comfortably with native English speakers.

Many ESL students can feel extremely overwhelmed being immersed in a country where they do not speak the language; it can be very frustrating because they cannot understand or participate in a class that is entirely taught in English or in the outside world around them. Most ESL programs have support systems in place to help alleviate these frustrations, such as the Summit YMCA ESL classes.

The Summit Area YMCA, in partnership with St. Teresa’s Church, offers ESL classes to the community to bring people of all nationalities together in order to improve communication with one another in a much more effective way.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER?

We’d love to have you! The Summit Area YMCA is a cause-driven, volunteer-led organization. Our volunteers are advocates for a better tomorrow. We view them as shining examples of social responsibility selflessly sharing their time, talent and treasure to advance the Y’s cause and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families locally.

ESL volunteers engage in conversation with participants to further their progress.

Program volunteers are required to complete our Program Volunteer Application and online training, submit references and pass a criminal background check. Once your application is received, it will be reviewed by our Volunteer Coordinator who will contact you within 3 business days to discuss your interests and next steps towards becoming a volunteer, which may include an interview.

YMCA NEWS

SUMMIT AREA YMCA

BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA | SUMMIT YMCA | THE LEARNING CIRCLE YMCA

In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men’s Christian Association, but today, we are The Y; an association that values, and is made stronger by, its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.

Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)3 charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.

Please note that the section of Maple Street closest to the Summit YMCA will be closed from approximately 7 AM to 11 AM on Sunday, May 5, for our Mother’s Day 5K. Please use Cedar Street to access the public lot that is next to our building.
