Outdoor Swim Lessons Are Back—Registration Opens April 14!

Get ready to dive in—Swim Lessons at the Berkeley Heights Community Pool at the YMCA and the Springfield Community Pool are back for the season, and general registration opens on April 14!

From April 1–13, lessons were open exclusively to our wonderful camp families. But starting April 14, registration opens to everyone, and we’ll be running classes through June.

Whether your child is brand new to swim lessons or ready to fine-tune their strokes, we’re here to help them build confidence in the water and grow stronger with every class. We have lessons available as early as 9 months old, to 10+.

What to Expect

During the first class, your child will be evaluated by our swim instructors and placed in the swim stage that best matches their skill level. No stress—just a chance for us to make sure every child gets the most out of their time in the pool.

We offer two swim tracks—Swim Basics and Swim Strokes—with a total of six progressive stages:

Swim Basics (Stages 1–3)

These stages focus on water safety, confidence, and foundational skills:

Stage 1: Water Acclimation – Helps children become comfortable in the water.

Stage 2: Water Movement – Encourages forward movement and independence.

Stage 3: Water Stamina – Builds endurance and reinforces safety skills.

Swim Strokes (Stages 4–6)

These stages focus on stroke technique, endurance, and mechanics:

Stage 4: Stroke Introduction – Introduces basic stroke movements.

Stage 5: Stroke Development – Develops more advanced stroke skills.

Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics – Polishes technique and increases stamina for all strokes.

Spots tend to go fast, so once April 14 hits, don’t wait too long to sign up!

SUMMIT AREA YMCA

BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA | SUMMIT YMCA | THE LEARNING CIRCLE YMCA

In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men’s Christian Association, but today, we are The Y; an association that values, and is made stronger by, its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.

Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)3 charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.

Please note that the section of Maple Street closest to the Summit YMCA will be closed from approximately 7 AM to 11 AM on Sunday, May 5, for our Mother’s Day 5K. Please use Cedar Street to access the public lot that is next to our building.
