On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, our community transformed words into action.
Our service & collection drive brought neighbors together in the spirit of service, equity, and compassion. What unfolded throughout the day was a powerful reminder of how much can happen when a community shows up with intention.
More than 50 families filled the Hubbard Gym, where weeks of donated clothing and toys were thoughtfully organized into a welcoming space. Families were invited to browse, select, and take home the items they needed most, creating an experience centered on dignity, care, and respect rather than simple distribution.
Behind the scenes, over 40 dedicated volunteers made the day possible. From sorting donations and organizing racks to setting up early and breaking down late, their time and commitment ensured everything ran smoothly. Their efforts turned generosity into meaningful impact and allowed the focus to remain on connection and community.
Service took many forms throughout the Y. In the Teen Center, participants honored Dr. King’s legacy through creativity, creating artwork for Color A Smile, a nonprofit that delivers encouraging messages to individuals facing challenging circumstances. Through art, teens reflected on kindness, empathy, and the power of small acts to bring light to others.
The donations collected in the weeks leading up to MLK Day, including coats, hats, gloves, toys, and games, provided critical winter support for local families. Items not distributed during the event will continue to benefit community partners, ensuring the impact of the drive extends beyond a single day.
Because of this collective effort, neighbors were supported, dignity was shared, and our community came together in a meaningful way. Every smile, every helping hand, and every creative moment reflected the values Dr. King championed.
Thank you for being the Y and for showing that when we serve together, we create real, lasting impact.
