Extra Special Prom 2025 Recap

This past Thursday, the Berkeley Heights YMCA gym transformed into a joyful underwater wonderland as we welcomed 65 participants with special needs for the annual Extra Special Prom!

From the moment promgoers stepped out of their limousines onto a roaring red carpet, greeted by volunteers, signs, applause, and cheers, the evening radiated joy, celebration, and inclusion. Each guest was crowned, given a corsage or boutonniere, and ushered into a night they will never forget.

Inside the gym, a dazzling ocean-themed atmosphere set the stage for magic. A towering purple balloon octopus created by Balloon Design Studio floated above the dance floor, where promgoers and their volunteer dates danced the night away. DJ Thoro Entertainment kept the music pumping and the energy high as guests took turns on the microphone and showed off their best moves.

In every corner of the room, there were smiles, high fives, and unforgettable moments. From festive photo ops and therapy dogs in costume to keepsake favors and heartfelt hugs, the night overflowed with connection and community spirit.

While students celebrated inside, parents and guardians gathered nearby for a relaxed buffet dinner. This special offering gave families the chance to connect, share stories, and enjoy the evening together in a warm and welcoming environment.

Behind the scenes, over 75 volunteers ensured the night ran smoothly, helping with everything from dancing and dining to photo booth fun and clean up. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community sponsors including Delicious Heights, PartyCenter, Sweet Nothings, Village Trattoria, Creative Comfort Pet Therapy, Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad, Adams Fine Clothing, DJ Limousine, and Summit Elks Lodge 1246.

As the evening came to a close, guests left with souvenir photos, party favors, and full hearts. More importantly, they carried the lasting feeling of being seen, supported, and celebrated.

The Under the Sea Gala was more than just a prom. It was a night of pure joy, empowerment, and belonging. Thank you to everyone who helped create a space where our guests could shine.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA | SUMMIT YMCA | THE LEARNING CIRCLE YMCA

In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men’s Christian Association, but today, we are The Y; an association that values, and is made stronger by, its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.

Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)3 charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.

Please note that the section of Maple Street closest to the Summit YMCA will be closed from approximately 7 AM to 11 AM on Sunday, May 5, for our Mother’s Day 5K. Please use Cedar Street to access the public lot that is next to our building.
