Fun, Flexible, and Full of Possibilities
Through childcare job opportunities, the Summit Area YMCA offers nurturing individuals the chance to be a role model for local kids while gaining valuable skills and experience that extend beyond the job itself.
At the Summit Area YMCA, childcare staff are more than supervisors; they’re mentors who create a safe and engaging environment for kids. Whether leading activities, assisting with homework, or encouraging creativity, every interaction offers a chance to make a positive impact.
“Every day, our childcare programs give staff the opportunities to inspire confidence in children, foster a sense of community, and create lasting memories,” said Associate Executive Director Kelly McHugh. “Beyond how deeply rewarding it is to work in these programs, our staff also gain leadership training and the chance to hone their problem-solving skills, which are essential in all areas of life.”
For those looking to make a lifelong career in childcare or education, the Summit Area YMCA also empowers its staff with growth opportunities and experiences that pave their futures.
“The training and support I received at the Summit Area YMCA helped me build my skills in childcare and team development, advance my career, and inspired me to help others along the way,” said teacher and New Employee Navigator Roberto Salcedo. “I started as a school-age counselor here, and through some great professional development opportunities, including the Y’s 12-month Multicultural Leadership Development program, I’ve grown in my role.”
Currently, the Summit Area YMCA has positions available in Kid Zone, its free child watch program for members; its before care and aftercare programs for school-age children; and its early childhood education centers, which are aptly named The Learning Lane at the Berkeley Heights YMCA and The Learning Circle YMCA in Summit.
Schedules are flexible to accommodate school, sports, and other commitments, making the job accessible to teens and adults balancing multiple responsibilities. Staff also have access to the Summit Area YMCA’s state-of-the-art facilities, promoting their own health and wellness as part of the experience.

About the Summit Area YMCA
In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men’s Christian Association, but today, we are The Y. An association that values and is made stronger by its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring, and respect — are integral to everyday operations.
Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 17,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling, and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure everyone can learn, grow, and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.
