Art for Kids Series | Pretzel Animals

Have fun with an art project you can eat!

This is a 4 step Project.

Materials:

  • 1 package yeast or 1 cake yeast
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt

Step 1: Prep Your Materials

Cover a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and dust with flour. With a fork mix egg in a cup.

Step 2: Mixing

In a big bowl, soften the yeast in the water by stirring together. Then mix in sugar, and salt. Stir in the flour. Knead on table until dough is smooth.
(That means squeeze and push dough down onto flat surface so it has even texture. Similar to potters clay.)

Step 3: Shape the dough and bake!

1. Immediately break it into small pieces and shape dough into animal forms. Roll coils or snake shapes about ¼” wide. Shape dough into animal shapes. Use a dab of water as glue.

2. Cover the cookie sheet with aluminum foil and dust with flour. Put your animal shapes here. Brush with beaten egg. Sprinkle with salt.

Step 4: Baking

1. Have an adult help you turn on the oven to 425 degrees and put the tray in the oven. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.

2. To make a traditional pretzel shape, roll a long thin coil about 8” long. Fold in half to create an upside down U.

3. Twist the 2 coils together. Fold the twist over the loop. Use a dab of warm water to make pretzel dough stick.

 4. What can you make? Take photos! Eat them! SHARE!

SUMMIT AREA YMCA

BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA | SUMMIT YMCA | THE LEARNING CIRCLE YMCA

In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men’s Christian Association, but today, we are The Y; an association that values, and is made stronger by, its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.

Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)3 charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.
