NEWS & UPDATES
Have a question or need to get in touch?
The Summit Area YMCA is a cause-driven, volunteer-led organization. Our volunteers are advocates for a better tomorrow. We view them as shining examples of social responsibility. They selflessly share their time, talent and treasure to advance the Y’s cause and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families locally in need of a helping hand.
Through our Y branches you can volunteer in many ways – from administrative functions to teaching, from mentoring to fundraising, from setting the strategic direction of the organization to event planning, and so much more.
Discover the Possibilities and Volunteer for the Summit Area YMCA today! As a Y volunteer you will, enhance the lives of children, teens, families and seniors, share new ideas with others to help them to expand their horizons, learn something different or have a new experience.
We are grateful to the nearly 1,000 volunteers of all ages who help the Summit Area YMCA achieve its mission to nurture and develop the potential of every child, promote healthy living and well-being, and assist neighbors in need. Volunteers are not only able to help the community, but are also able to expand their horizons, learn new skills, and gain new and meaningful experiences.
As a Y volunteer, you can get involved in volunteer opportunities that:
Fit your personal interests and skills.
Enable you to help out with a single event or register to make a difference at a few different events.
Empower you to work with a diverse community of children or adults.
Option 1: Visit one of our branches and complete a Volunteer Application at the Membership Services desk. If available, the Branch Volunteer Coordinator may speak with you during your visit or will call you within 48 hours to discuss your interests.
Option 2: Download the Volunteer Application online and email or mail your completed application to:
99 Morris Avenue, Summit, NJ 07901
Once your application is received, it will be forwarded to the Branch Volunteer Coordinator at your preferred location who will contact you within 48 hours to discuss your interests and schedule an interview.
To ensure the highest level of safety for our members and children, we are very careful with our employee and volunteer selection. Most volunteer positions will require your completion of new volunteer paperwork and online training, along with reference checks and your approval for a criminal background check. Special event volunteers are generally required to complete only the Volunteer Data Sheet and understand the job’s responsibilities.
Provide leadership and support to many high quality programs and services enjoyed by the community such as coaching youth sports, mentoring middle or high school students, and assisting with child care programs.

The goal of the Summit ACHIEVE Community Garden is to grow organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs to promote healthy eating. The garden sits on a parcel of land donated for use by Overlook Medical Center, and was partially funded by a grant to the Summit Area YMCA from the Centers for Disease Control's ACHIEVE program. ACHIEVE stands for Action Communities for Health, Innovation & Environmental Change. Become a Community Gardener today!
