Group Exercise Class Guidelines & Policies


INDOOR GROUP EXERCISE CLASS GUIDELINES

Class Policies & Reservation Guidelines:

• Group exercise classes at the Berkeley Heights YMCA or Summit YMCA are included as a benefit to Summit Area YMCA members.
• You must complete our updated membership waiver online before attending any class. Click here to access the new membership waiver.
• We request participants to arrive at least 5 minutes before the start of class for ample time to check-in, receive your health screening, set up your equipment and be prepared when class begins.
• Upon check in, you will be required to participate in a temperature check using a touchless thermometer and a health screening where you will be asked several Covid-19 related questions (see health questionnaire below).
• If you have a fever of 100.4 or greater or answer positively to any of the health screening questions you will not be allowed to attend the class. You will not be charged any late cancellation/no show fee if this occurs.
• You will be asked to use hand sanitizer upon check-in.
• You must maintain 6 feet of social distancing from other members and Y staff except when getting your temperature taken.
• You should remain in your designated workout spot for the duration of class.
• At the end of class, you will leave any equipment that belongs to the Y in your workout spot.
• For safety reasons, classes are limited based on space, social distancing capacity and the availability of equipment.
• Since group size is limited, pre-reservations are required for all classes via the SAY Mobile App or our online schedules and walk-ins are not allowed.
• Only guests with purchased day passes are allowed to participate in group exercise at this time. Review guest policies here.
• Summit Area YMCA staff cannot make group exercise class reservations on your behalf.
• Class reservations open two [2] days in advance at class start time via the SAY Mobile App or our online schedules.
• Class reservations close four [4] hours prior to class start time via the SAY Mobile App or our online schedules. The 4-hour close window includes the ability to make or cancel reservations.
• Class reservations can be cancelled up to four [4] hours prior to class start time via the SAY Mobile App or our online schedules. The cancellation feature is available the same way reservations are made, via the SAY Mobile App or our online schedules
If you book a spot in a class and do not cancel your reservation before the 4 hour close window, you will be charged a late cancellation/no show fee of $10. We are not accepting phone calls or emails to cancel class reservations at this time.
Late arrivals will have forfeited their spot even if they have a reservation and will be charged a late cancellation/no show fee of $10.
• While members and staff are required to wear masks at all times on YMCA property, masks are optional for participants of indoor cycling classes only as this is defined as rigorous physical activity per NJ Executive Order 157.
• For hygienic reasons, yoga mats or props are not provided for any yoga classes. Members are encouraged to bring their own.
• Members are encouraged to bring their own water as there will be no access to water fountains.
• No hands on correction, adjustments or stretching assistance from staff will be allowed.
• Facilities and any equipment (if applicable) will be cleaned, disinfected and sanitized by staff before and after each class.
• Group exercise class participants must be a minimum of 13 years old and a minimum of 16 years old for Hot Yoga, Primal Fitness, TRX & MX4. 
• For the safety of all participants, cell phone use is prohibited once class begins.
• Appropriate exercise attire and footwear is required.
• All group fitness rooms that have locks will remain locked when classes are not in session.
• If you decide to leave the class early (whether you know in advance or if it's last-minute), please notify the instructor that you will be leaving.
• In the event that there are no participants by the time class begins, the instructor will wait 10 minutes before cancelling the class.
• The Y reserves the right to cancel classes with low enrollment.
• Our instructors have the right to ask a participant to leave if any of these guidelines are not followed.
• These Group Exercise Guidelines & Policies are included as part of the Summit Area YMCA’s Member Code of Conduct Policy and participants who continually abuse the policies may have their group exercise privileges removed indefinitely.

Health Screening Questionnaire for Members & Staff

Are you currently experiencing the following symptoms that are related to COVID-19?

• Fever of 100.4 or greater
• Cough
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Sore throat
• New loss of taste or smell
• Chills
• Head or muscle aches
• Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting

We know that staying fit and active are key components to a healthy lifestyle that can help reduce stress, prevent illness and build a strong immune system. While we would love to see you at the Y, if you are unable to join us in-person at this time you don't have to miss your workout! As an advocate for healthy living regardless of circumstance, the Summit Area YMCA has created a brand new Virtual Fitness Studio as a benefit to your membership that provides you with a variety of online exercise options for you to complete your workout, your way -- whenever and wherever you choose!

Our virtual fitness studio includes a growing library of on-demand workout videos with new fitness classes added weekly from your favorite instructors at the Y, that you can search through by category, instructor, intensity, target area and more.

OUTDOOR GROUP EXERCISE CLASS GUIDELINES

Outdoor classes are currently unavailable due to winter weather.

• Late comers will not be allowed to participate in the class after class check-in has ended (at class start time).
• Members and staff will be required to wear masks during check-in and the health screening. Masks during workouts for outdoor fitness classes are optional.
• Members are encouraged to bring their own mats for all classes if desired -- as none will be provided.
• If you book a spot in a class and do not cancel your reservation before the 4 hour close window, you will be charged a late cancellation/no show fee of $10. We are not accepting phone calls or emails to cancel class reservations at this time.
• All outdoor classes are weather dependent. If we have to cancel or move the class indoors due to weather, you will be notified by email as soon as decision is made. Please check your email prior to class.
• Upon check in, you will be required to participate in a temperature check using a touchless thermometer and a health screening where you will be asked several Covid-19 related questions (see below).
• If you have a fever of 100.4 or greater or answer positively to any of the health screening questions you will not be allowed to attend the class. You will not be charged any late cancellation/no show fee if this occurs.
• You must wear a mask as you exit your car, keep it on through the health screening and until you are in your assigned workout spot.
• You will be asked to use hand sanitizer upon check-in.
• You must maintain 6 feet of social distancing from other members and Y staff except when getting your temperature taken.
• At check in, you will be assigned a numbered workout spot and be asked to proceed to your spot as soon as check in is complete.
• You will remain in your assigned workout spot for the duration of class.
• At the end of class, you will leave any equipment that belongs to the Y in your workout spot.
• You will need to put your mask back on to leave class and return to your car.
• You may bring your own weights but we will have weights available for use.
• All YMCA weights and bikes will be disinfected and sanitized before and after each use.
• Members must bring their own water as there will be no access to water fountains.
