Calling all Lifeguards

With registration for the Summit Area YMCA’s outdoor pools now open, only one thing is still needed to ensure another unforgettable summer: exceptional lifeguarding staff. To recruit the best of the best, the Summit Area YMCA currently offers free lifeguard, CPR-PR, and first-aid certification training to gifted swimmers who commit to working during the 2024 season.

Both the Community Pool at the Berkeley Heights YMCA and the Springfield Community Pool are the heart of their towns from May through early September, and this is the case thanks to the vigilant presence of its lifeguards. For the staff, their time lifeguarding builds friendships, creates lifelong memories, and deepens their connection to the community.

“Over the years, our lifeguards have consistently told us that they’ve gained invaluable experience working at our pools,” said Summit Area YMCA Associate Executive Director Brian Bartone. “In addition to learning life-saving skills, their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of every individual fosters a culture of trust among our swimmers, creating a haven where families and friends can enjoy their time with peace of mind.”

It doesn’t hurt that the job itself takes place outdoors at two beautiful locations. The Olympic-size Community Pool at the Berkeley Heights YMCA is undergoing a major green space expansion and will unveil a brand-new snack shack this summer. The Springfield Community Pool boasts a stunning 15-acre property with a full-service lunch and snack bar, picnicking areas, and basketball and volleyball courts that can be used during break.

“Our outdoor pools are not merely a place to swim during the summer; they’re a vital hub for enriching programs that include summer camps, aqua fitness classes, and activities for seniors,” said Summit Area YMCA Chief Operations Officer Terri Clinton. “All of these meaningful services to the communities that keep kids engaged during the summer, help our neighbors stay healthy, and build connections among seniors would simply not be possible without the top-notch staff we hire.”

With the outdoor pools opening during Memorial Day weekend, those interested in a seasonal lifeguarding position are encouraged to apply now.

SUMMIT AREA YMCA

BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA | SUMMIT YMCA | THE LEARNING CIRCLE YMCA

In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men’s Christian Association, but today, we are The Y; an association that values, and is made stronger by, its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.

Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)3 charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.

Please note that the section of Maple Street closest to the Summit YMCA will be closed from approximately 7 AM to 11 AM on Sunday, May 5, for our Mother’s Day 5K. Please use Cedar Street to access the public lot that is next to our building.
