ESL (English as a Second Language) classes help non-native speakers of all ages and levels to learn both the formal grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation of spoken and written English while giving them confidence in the common usage of the language in order to communicate clearly and comfortably with native English speakers.
Many ESL students can feel extremely overwhelmed being immersed in a country where they do not speak the language; it can be very frustrating because they cannot understand or participate in a class that is entirely taught in English or in the outside world around them. Most ESL programs have support systems in place to help alleviate these frustrations, such as the Summit YMCA ESL classes.
The Summit Area YMCA, in partnership with St. Teresa's Church, offers ESL classes to the community to bring people of all nationalities together in order to improve communication with one another in a much more effective way.

We view them as shining examples of social responsibility selflessly sharing their time, talent and treasure to advance the Y’s cause and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families locally.
ESL volunteers engage in conversation with participants to further their progress.
Program volunteers are required to complete our Program Volunteer Application and online training, submit references and pass a criminal background check. Once your application is received, it will be reviewed by our Volunteer Coordinator who will contact you within 3 business days to discuss your interests and next steps towards becoming a volunteer, which may include an interview.
