October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign by the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. Join the Y on Wednesday, October 27, as we RISE together to help uplift women in need. We encourage members, guests, and staff to wear pink in solidarity with breast cancer survivors, remember those we lost, and support the progress to defeat breast cancer.
The past year has posed a challenge to just about everything, and breast cancer prevention is no exception. Although there were setbacks in screenings and early detection, we’re rising to the challenge together.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and LIVESTRONG® joined together to create LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program is a free, 12-week small-group recovery program offered to adult cancer survivors looking to regain their health and strength in a small group, supportive environment. Participants in this program work with specially trained Y staff to customize the program to their individual needs. For the duration of the program, participants also receive a Summit Area YMCA membership and access to our Virtual Fitness Studio. Common goals include rebuilding muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, reducing fatigue and improving confidence and self-esteem.

In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men's Christian Association, but today, we are The Y. An association that values, and is made stronger by, its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.
Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)3 charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.
