November is a month dedicated to giving thanks. Giving Tuesday was created to help the “giving season” get started, reminding people that there is more to holidays than consumerism and commercialization. The intention is to set aside a day that was all about celebrating the generosity of giving.
When you give to the Summit Area YMCA, you’re investing in our community. The Summit Area YMCA has been a part of this community for over 136 years. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. Our mission to create equal opportunities for all isn't possible without the generosity of members, donors, and partners like you. As a cause driven nonprofit organization, we want to live up to that message by helping people and families throughout our region attain their fullest potential, whether in spirit or mind. Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to give back and invest in our community. All donations help deepen our impact as we transform lives for the better by nurturing the potential and well-being of our children, promoting healthy living among all, and strengthening a sense of caring and social responsibility across our community.
There are many ways to celebrate Giving Tuesday - donate to local nonprofit organizations, like the Summit Area YMCA, charities, and foundations, whether it's monetary or by volunteering your time; donating shelf stable foods to food drives and local pantries; donating clothing to coat drives; by visiting a blood drive to give some assistance to local hospitals; or by taking action by volunteering at community events and participating in local projects.
Even as many face financial uncertainties, generosity is not about size. From calling an elderly neighbor to chat to offering translation help; from showing gratitude to our healthcare workers to donating to your local food bank, every act of kindness is a beacon of hope. We all have something to give, and every act of human consideration and kindness matters.
Join #GivingTuesdayNow a chance for us to stand united to show that we are all in this together.
The Y’s financial assistance program is 100% funded by donations. Membership fees cover our facilities, salaries, and other operating expenses but do not fund our financial assistance program. The financial investment in our organization from our members, staff, and community members ensures that our doors are open to all, regardless of financial circumstance. From supporting our Special Needs programs to helping a child learn how to swim for free in our 2nd Grade Learn to Swim program, or teaching a child healthy habits as a 7th grader with a free Y membership, or helping LIVESTRONG Cancer survivors to rehabilitate in mind and body, these are just a few examples of how the Summit Area YMCA provides opportunities for all to learn, grow, and thrive.
In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men's Christian Association, but today, we are The Y. An association that values, and is made stronger by, its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.
Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.
