Exercising regularly as we age can help prevent chronic age-related conditions like diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and more as well as boost memory and brain health. The Summit Area YMCA will be offering Enhance® Fitness, a proven community-based senior fitness class that helps motivate older adults to stay physically active while increasing their strength, balance and flexibility while having fun too! The program has been nationally recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US Department of Health and Human Services, US Department on Aging, and the National Council on Aging. According to “Implementation and effectiveness of a community-based health promotion program for older adults” in the Journal of Gerontology, there are proven results of a 90% participant retention rate with 53% of participants experiencing an improvement in depression, and fewer hospitalizations than those of non-participants.
Enhance® Fitness is a 16-week senior fitness program designed to enhance balance and flexibility through modified moves that include cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and more to help adults lead stronger, healthier lives. A typical 60 minute class includes a combination of warm up, aerobic, strength training, stretching, and cool down exercises. A certified instructor with special training will help participants to reduce the severity of arthritis symptoms. The friendly, welcoming atmosphere encourages social interaction amongst adults, which improves the cognitive and emotional well-being for older adults. All fitness levels are welcome, and are most beneficial for older adults combating arthritis.
