Open Swim for Children with Special Needs

Soak up the summer sun at our pools!

Join us at either the Berkeley Heights Community Pool at the YMCA or the Springfield Community Pool to have some fun under the sun! This is a free program that allows youth and teens with diverse abilities to have a safe and fun time by the pool. Program ends August 28, 2022.

Maintaining the safety of each child is our top priority. Volunteers will be available as 1-on-1 swim buddies for children who require constant supervision in the pool. Spots for children that require a buddy are limited, based on number of volunteers available. If your child does not require 1-on-1 supervision, then you will always have a spot.

ScheduleS
  • Thursdays, 6:00 - 7:00PM, Springfield Community Pool
  • Saturdays, 12:00 - 1:00PM, Berkeley Height Community Pool at the YMCA

RELATED PROGRAMS

The Special Needs Programs at the Summit Area YMCA are thoughtfully designed for children with diverse abilities like communication, social, behavioral and learning differences to thrive in a safe, friendly and supportive environment. Our mission is to encourage, help, build and strengthen healthy physical activity, confidence, social skills and more. From sports and pet therapy, to swim or special events, participants can enjoy a variety of activities that promote health, wellness, creative enrichment, socialization and more.

VIEW PROGRAMS

Our Fridays in Motion program, is a free, monthly recreational and social event which engages teens through games, swimming, sports, arts, crafts, and pet therapy visits. While simple in concept, the program itself filled a gap within the community that families with special needs children often faced—a lack of safe spaces, places and things to do with their children.

SUMMIT AREA YMCA

BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA | SUMMIT YMCA | THE LEARNING CIRCLE YMCA

In 1886, we were founded as the Young Men's Christian Association, but today, we are The Y. An association that values, and is made stronger by, its diverse people. We stand for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility — For a better us. We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.

Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.
