An Extra Special Prom: Hollywood Walk of Fame May 20

The Summit Area YMCA is proud to bringing back one of our favorite events of the year, an Extra Special Prom on Friday, May 20, 2022 at the Berkeley Heights YMCA! This night to remember is hosted for teens and young adults (ages 14-21) with special needs to dance the night away with this year's theme as the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Extra Special Prom is sponsored in partnership with the Summit Elks Lodge #1246.

Our special guests arrive to the venue for a full Hollywood experience. Once they make their way to the brand-new Berkeley Height YMCA, they will be greeted by their volunteer buddy companions for the evening and crowned King or Queen prior to walking into the event on the red carpet as the stars that they are. The Y's large gymnasium will be transformed into an elegant Hollywood "afterparty," which will have special touches created and donated by Balloon Design Studio, for our special guests to dance and laugh the night away with their friends, families, and volunteers.

Throughout the night, guests can capture happy moments in our photo booth or pose for the "paparazzi," our Summit High School Photography Club volunteers. If they need a party break our Quiet Room will be open to all guests, with calming activities including pet therapy and board games, to rest and regroup before gearing back up for the dance floor.

Dinner and desserts are also included and graciously provided this year by Delicious Heights of Berkeley Heights, who have been a staple of our communities for decades.

We're so happy to host this fun night for our teens, but believe as parents and guardians you deserve some fun too and are invited to relax and enjoy dinner at the Y in a separate space from the student's activities. After 8:00 PM, all parents and guardians are welcome to join the dance floor! If you are planning to attend, please complete the parent/guardian registration form so we can plan and prepare accordingly.

SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAMS

The success of our Fridays in Motion program at the Berkeley Heights YMCA and Summit YMCA, a free recreational and social event held monthly engaging special needs youth through games, swimming, sports, arts, crafts, and pet therapy visits, has paved way for the Summit Area YMCA to expand its special needs programming. Participants can enjoy a variety of activities that promote health, wellness, creative enrichment, socialization and more in the name of our mission to encourage, help, build and strengthen healthy physical activity, confidence, social skills and more in all.

While simple in concept, the program itself filled a gap within the community that families with special needs children often faced—a lack of safe spaces, places and things to do with their children.

“It might not seem like much to some,” said Paul Kieltyka, President and CEO of the Summit YMCA, “but for others, especially families with special needs children, having a safe, welcoming place to bring their kids to have fun means a lot. Some children—they might be affected by loud noises, certain colors, smells. They might have trouble communicating. It could be any number of things, but certain families can’t just up and go somewhere else for vacation with their kids like other families can. And that’s where the Y comes in. Come here, have fun together, make friends, enjoy the pool. We’re providing a space for people to relax, connect, and be happy. It’s wonderful.”

FRIDAYS IN MOTION

As a member of the Diversity, Inclusion and Global Innovation Network, the Summit Area YMCA is committed to bridge building and encouraging a welcoming atmosphere within the community. The Y is made up of people from all walks of life who are joined together by a shared commitment to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Supporting families and the community in their efforts to spread awareness, appreciation for diversity and a sense of inclusivity for everyone in the community is core to the Y’s mission to help every individual reach their highest potential.
