BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ, [JULY 6, 2021]
Early Friday afternoon, on July 2, 2021, there was an automobile accident in the parking lot of the new Berkeley Heights YMCA that resulted in the fatality of a 73-year-old pedestrian.
An investigation into the circumstances of the motor vehicle crash was conducted by local authorities and the facility was closed for the remainder of the day. The driver sustained no injuries and remained on the scene to answer questions.
From the moment the incident occurred, Summit Area YMCA staff acted quickly in their response to the accident. Emergency protocols were activated, the Berkeley Heights Police Department were contacted, and they worked closely with authorities coordinating of all the necessary actions to assist and maintain the safety of everyone present in the area and the facility.
“This was a tragic and unfortunate accident and our sympathy is shared with all who were affected,” said Summit Area YMCA President & CEO Paul Kieltyka. “Our Y family is tight knit. To lose a member, coworker or volunteer is always a painful experience for us. Yet, we can also take solace in that we are a family who are always here to support each other in times of happiness and sorrow.”
