Summit Area YMCA Provides Flexible After School Programming for Half Day & Remote Students

As more public school districts across New Jersey have announced hybrid plans for partial in-person and remote learning schedules, the Summit Area YMCA continues to adapt its after school child care program to provide a safe environment for students of working parents after school. Whether that begins at 12:30 PM or 3:00 PM, there is care for your child at the Y if needed.

Based on current public school plans, the Berkeley Heights YMCA is providing a variety of new extended after school care and flexible combination options to cater to community needs such as care at your child’s school on your child’s in person half days (ex. from 12:30 PM - 5:00 PM) and full day care at the Y on their remote learning days (from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM). The Berkeley Heights YMCA has partnered with the Berkeley Heights & New Providence school systems for years to offer before and after care for their students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Explore current offerings for Berkeley Heights & New Providence here.

The Summit Area YMCA also runs after school and full day holiday care for Summit students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 and its surrounding community out of the Summit YMCA. It's newly adapted after school care program is extended to run from 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM on days public school is in session. Explore current offerings for Summit students here. 

Typically, our after care programs provide enrichment for students of working parents at the end of the school day where children are guided through an afternoon of activities including homework time and structured recreation like STEM, arts & crafts and games. Because we believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive, our dedicated YMCA child care staff has also committed to assisting students in their mandatory remote learning process, provided they bring their own laptops or tablets. 

Additionally, the Y also offers holiday care on school vacation days, such as teacher conventions, holidays, winter and spring vacations, when your child's school is closed and child care programs at the YMCA are open (enrollment for holiday care is separate and at an additional cost).

As always, the safety of our children, families and staff are our top priority. We are working closely with the CDC, DCF and New Jersey Department of Health guidelines to ensure safety and prevention of disease. Similar to program participants, Summit Area YMCA staff are also subject to daily health screenings and temperature checks, hand sanitizing, face mask, social distancing requirements and more. Staff will always wear masks and it is expected that children wear masks as much as is possible; individual cases will be discussed with parents as needed.

Parents and guardians can enjoy peace of mind as their children spend their school day with us in a safe and clean environment. Since the opening of our early childcare programs on June 15th, we are confident in our stringent procedures for maintaining high health and safety standards, and we will continue to adhere to strict cleaning practices as guided by DCF, CDC and the New Jersey Department of Health.
