Togetherhood®: A Year in Review

Togetherhood®: A Year in Review

Togetherhood® is a Summit Area YMCA volunteer led initiative that supports community needs through a variety of projects including senior outreach, cultural engagement, addressing food insecurity, and holding other special events throughout the year.

2019 was our fourth and best year of Togetherhood® at the Summit YMCA! We are very privileged to be a part of YMCA volunteers and to have an opportunity to make meaningful changes in our community. Our chairman, Kevin Hill, says ‘Togetherhood®is an opportunity to make a positive contribution in the lives of our community. It also supports and uplifts those who are in need.’

What others say about Togetherhood®: "I love Togetherhood® because bringing a group of people together gives us so much strength to carry out projects that alone could be very challenging. There is strength in numbers and our strength allow us to help improve our community"

“We are a diverse group of people with different backgrounds and viewpoints who share a common goal of making a positive impact in our community.”

“YMCA gives us support and a platform to execute our projects. It is a very well-run group and my time is never wasted here. We meet once a month and we focus on our projects. This is a great way to volunteer when your time is limited. I love it!”

In 2019, we continued Senior Spa Day. It is a monthly program we offer to seniors in the community. Volunteers provide light manicures gentle volunteers. In May, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo with our friends at Senior Center in Summit. The Summit School of Dance entertained our guests with various dances from different age groups. There were also arts and crafts, lunch and prizes for our seniors who enjoyed the day with our company.

In October, we partnered with Central Presbyterian Church and the Summit Lion's Club to host The Rise Against Hunger food packaging event. Our volunteers packaged over 20,000 meal bags that were distributed to children and families around the world. Each bag was joyfully assembled with love, rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including essential vitamins and minerals.

During the holiday season, in partnership with Family Promise, we hosted pool party for families in need. It was heartwarming to see the children having fun playing games and splashing around in the pool. We also offered some small gifts to them and their parents.

We finally closed the year with our main fundraising event: Annual Cookie Walk. We sold nearly 2000 cookies baked by our volunteers and had fun dressing up and bringing holiday spirit to our neighbors. In 2020, we will maintain our wonderful community relationships and collaborate with even more organizations to serve our community!
