Summit Area YMCA Passing the 5K Baton to Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts

For the past 18 years, The Summit Area YMCA has proudly hosted the Mother’s Day 5K Race in Berkeley Heights. This race has become an important tradition, bringing together the Berkeley Heights, Summit, New Providence and neighboring communities in support of adult cancer recovery through LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, as well as help foster healthy living for individuals and families of all ages and abilities. Last year’s attendance exceeded over 1,200 runners and their families.

Eighteen months ago, the Y launched a capital fundraising campaign in support of constructing a new Berkeley Heights YMCA and Community Pool at 59 Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights and renovation of the Summit YMCA at 67 Maple Street in Summit. We are confident that these capital improvements will ensure people are healthier, more connected and stronger as we continue to adapt to and strive to meet the changing needs of our growing community. We are proud to announce that we have secured $1.7 million towards our $7 million fundraising goal.

As we work diligently each day to serve the community and given our keen focus to ensure the new Berkeley Heights YMCA is ready to welcome members in early 2020, it is with mixed emotions that we inform you that the Y will pass the baton to the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts to host the 2019 Mother’s Day 5K and continue the tradition of this important community event in the years ahead. We believe that our mission to transform lives through our programs and services is mirrored in their cause to change lives through music in the communities we both serve.

We wish the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts great success this year and are confident that we will seamlessly transition our experience and learnings from the past 18 years to their capable hands.
