Winter Session of Livestrong at the YMCA and Healthy Hearts Cardiac Maintenance Programs Begin in January

At the Summit Area YMCA, we are pleased to announce the start of new winter sessions for both our Healthy Hearts Cardio Maintenance Program and The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program. Both programs will be offered at the Berkeley Heights YMCA and Summit YMCA branches. We are dedicated to promoting healthy living which includes a holistic approach to wellness and a focus on building a healthy spirit, mind, and body. There are two very unique wellness programs which embody this holistic approach.

HEALTHY HEARTS CARDIAc MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

The Summit Area YMCA will begin its next session of the Healthy Hearts Cardiac Maintenance Program with a focus on heart disease and cardio health in early January. Healthy Hearts is free and open to the public and designed for people who want to improve their cardiovascular by learning how to exercise independently so they can maintain their cardiovascular health and a life of healthy habits. It is for anyone wishing to improve or maintain cardiovascular health, whether or not they have had a cardiac event. Each session of Healthy Hearts will focus on cardiovascular exercise, building muscle strength and working on flexibility in a small group non-medically supervised setting.

The program is directed by Nationally certified trainers and will meet for 12 weeks with a limit of 10 participants and 2 trainers present at each session. The sessions will utilize the cardio and strength equipment in the fitness center and focus on cardio exercise, strength and flexibility. There will be 4 assessments completed at the beginning and completion of the program to measure cardiovascular endurance, upper body and lower body strength and flexibility. Rate of Perceived Exertion and personal fitness trackers will be utilized to monitor participant’s exertion and heart rate.

PROGRAM GOALS:
• Teach participants how to exercise independently to maintain cardiovascular health.
• Build muscle strength with upper body and lower body exercises.
• Improve overall flexibility.
• Coach participants to continue a lifetime of healthy habits.

The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program

A new session for The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program, a 12-week cancer recovery program, will begin at both branches in early January. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA helps cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to return to normality. The Summit Area YMCA staff is trained in supportive cancer care, and works with participants in building muscle mass, strength, increasing flexibility, endurance, improving confidence, self-esteem and more.

“I would recommend this program to people who are recovering from cancer and who think that they can’t do any exercises—because The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA staff is so good. They will take you from taking one baby step to really inspiring you to continue and making it a life goal to continue to take care of yourself through exercise. I just can’t say enough about them. They’re caring. They’re empathetic…They seem to know how far to push without going too far and it challenges you. The program had a really wonderful effect on my husband.” – Margaret Lorenzo, Spouse of The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program Participant

Certified Summit Area YMCA trainers and staff guide cancer survivors in exercises that improve their physical strength, flexibility and endurance. The small group setting at the YMCA also helps participants connect and draw from a supportive network of those who have gone through similar life experiences. The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program helps survivors to become healthier and happier individuals. Each session lasts for 12 weeks, where participants and their families receive a free Y membership for full access to YMCA facilities, including KidZone childcare services. There are two 75 minute classes each week within a small group setting of 8-10 participants.
