5 Ways to Stay Healthy This Summer

As we approach the summer season, it’s a great time to make healthy strides! The warmer months are a perfect time to get fit and explore new ways to stay active. At the Summit Area YMCA, we have a number of activities to help spark your summer health kick! We’ve listed below some great ways to stay healthy throughout this summertime:

1.Swim Lessons or Aqua Exercise

Aqua exercise is a great method to build cardiovascular fitness and strength. If you haven’t yet learned how to swim, now is a great time! Not only is swimming fun, but it also keeps your heart and lungs healthy, improves strength and flexibility, increases stamina, and can even improve balance and posture! Water exercise classes are low impact and suitable for people of any age, from beginners to elite athletes. If you are looking for a refreshing way to get fit, aquatic exercise is the way to go!

2. Participate in a Charity Run

Do you enjoy running? Try participating in a race for a good cause! Charity runs are great for beginner runners, as it gives you great motivation to start training. On days where you may be less-than-excited to head out for a run, knowing that a charity is relying on you may be that extra push you need. Others participating in the charity run are also a great support network! Many offer training plans and also provide friendly faces on race day. Many different types of charities utilize race-style fundraisers, but you can even start your own! Use a nonprofit registration platform to get started.

3. Find a Group Exercise Class

Group exercise classes are one of the best ways to get in shape and sustain a healthy lifestyle! Working out in a group setting is much more fun than exercising independently. The accountability and camaraderie that is present in a group exercise class is like nothing else, and they are known to boost endorphin levels. Your group will likely encourage and boost your attendance for each class. There are so many types of group exercise classes, so you’re sure to find one that suits you!

4. Register for a Summer Camp

Summer sports camps are widely popular among kids and teens. Even if your favorite sport is out of season for the summer, it is likely that a summer camp will be in session! Sports camps are a great way to stay fit during the summer, as they provide you with set workouts and scrimmages. Your team will already will be provided to you within the camp, so there is no need to rally your friends to play with you!

5. Sign Up for a Fitness Program

Individual or small group programs are an excellent way to target your workout plan. Whether you are new to the gym or have been attending for years, a personal trainer is a knowledgeable resource. Personal trainers can guide you through your fitness routine, teaching you the proper form and technique. They can also help you in establishing a lifetime exercise habit, and encourage you to make working out a priority.
