FREE YMCA MEMBERSHIPS for all Seventh Graders!

[Summit, NJ] [May 2018] - At the Summit Area YMCA, we are dedicated to nurturing the potential of our youth, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility in efforts to strengthen our community. Because 7th Grade is known to be a pivotal and transitional time for many teens, we are proud to offer this unique 7th Grade Membership Program.

Our 7th Grade Membership Program supports and encourages kids to make good decisions and form healthy habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle, while demonstrating our commitment and philosophy for a well-rounded approach to the healthy development of the whole person.

The Program provides 7th graders with a free annual YMCA membership that includes access to fitness and sports programs, engaging activities and special events allowing socialization with like-minded peers in a safe, supervised and conveniently located environment. Summit Area YMCA Staff members and Teen Staff demonstrate and reinforce the Y core values of responsibility, respect, caring and honesty and provide 7th graders with the role models they need as they mature into young adults.

Damon, a Summit Area YMCA member said “The fitness staff teaches me how to do new workouts and help me stay in shape for football. Sometimes I also bring my friends to play basketball, which is great because we’re not home doing nothing or watching TV – being here makes me feel productive and happy. “

The 7th Grade Initiative is available to rising and current 7th graders who reside within Summit, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Millburn, Springfield, Short Hills, Gillette, and Stirling. The annual membership opens for the 2018-2019 school year on June 18, 2018 at the Summit YMCA, located at 67 Maple Street. At the Berkeley Heights YMCA, located at 550 Springfield Avenue, the membership begins on September 15, 2018. 7th Graders can sign up at the branch of their choice.

Signing up is simple, all students need is their parent/guardian and a copy of their school ID or report card. Students will be asked to sign a code of conduct, fill out some paperwork, and sign up for the required fitness equipment demonstrations that focus on safety and proper technique.
Students will receive a temporary access card until they complete all the required demos. Demos must be scheduled in advance. Once all required demos are completed, 7th graders will have access to the Y fitness center and applicable programming.

This special 7th grade membership is free thanks to the generosity of YMCA donors and it demonstrates our commitment and philosophy for a well-rounded approach to the healthy development of the whole person.

As child obesity becomes a national epidemic and the consumption of digital media becomes a growing trend amongst teens, encouraging healthy living in our youth is an integral part of our mission towards a healthier community at the Summit Area YMCA. On April 21st, we hosted Healthy Kids Day which was part of a nationwide program to improve the health and well-being of kids and families. The event included games, healthy cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts and more health-related activities. To read about Healthy Kids Day please go to thesay.org/healthykids.
To encourage more physical activity and less time in the digital world, sign your kids up for summer camp! The Summit Area YMCA is proud to offer 50+ camp choices for children ages 3 years to 16 years so they can enjoy safe and exciting opportunities to explore, learn, create and discover the world around them.
