[Summit, NJ] [May 2018] - At the Summit Area YMCA, we are dedicated to nurturing the potential of our youth, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility in efforts to strengthen our community. Because 7th Grade is known to be a pivotal and transitional time for many teens, we are proud to offer this unique 7th Grade Membership Program.
Our 7th Grade Membership Program supports and encourages kids to make good decisions and form healthy habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle, while demonstrating our commitment and philosophy for a well-rounded approach to the healthy development of the whole person.
The Program provides 7th graders with a free annual YMCA membership that includes access to fitness and sports programs, engaging activities and special events allowing socialization with like-minded peers in a safe, supervised and conveniently located environment. Summit Area YMCA Staff members and Teen Staff demonstrate and reinforce the Y core values of responsibility, respect, caring and honesty and provide 7th graders with the role models they need as they mature into young adults.
Damon, a Summit Area YMCA member said “The fitness staff teaches me how to do new workouts and help me stay in shape for football. Sometimes I also bring my friends to play basketball, which is great because we’re not home doing nothing or watching TV – being here makes me feel productive and happy. “
The 7th Grade Initiative is available to rising and current 7th graders who reside within Summit, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Millburn, Springfield, Short Hills, Gillette, and Stirling. The annual membership opens for the 2018-2019 school year on June 18, 2018 at the Summit YMCA, located at 67 Maple Street. At the Berkeley Heights YMCA, located at 550 Springfield Avenue, the membership begins on September 15, 2018. 7th Graders can sign up at the branch of their choice.
Signing up is simple, all students need is their parent/guardian and a copy of their school ID or report card. Students will be asked to sign a code of conduct, fill out some paperwork, and sign up for the required fitness equipment demonstrations that focus on safety and proper technique.

The event included games, healthy cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts and more health-related activities. To read about Healthy Kids Day please go to thesay.org/healthykids.
