“After surgery and chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, I was left bald, tired and scared. The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program helped me overcome my aversion to exercise and get back to being myself again.” said Ann, Berkeley Heights YMCA program participant. “The instructors were wonderful, motivating, knowledgeable and donated a lot of their time to helping us recover. I’m now enjoying Zumba and walking on the treadmill has made me feel better and I look more fit. I’m so happy to be doing something that makes me healthier and I’m grateful to the staff from the Summit Area YMCA who have helped me on my journey.”
A new session for The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program, a 12-week cancer recovery program, will begin at the Berkeley Heights YMCA on May 1, 2018. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA helps cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to return to normality. The Summit Area YMCA staff is trained in supportive cancer care, and work with participants in building muscle mass, strength, increasing flexibility, endurance, improving confidence, self-esteem and more.
“Sometimes, cancer survivors have very simple goals that most healthy individuals take for granted,” said Sue Fieseler, Director of Community Wellness at the Summit YMCA. “Goals like, ‘I want to be able to play with my grandchildren again.’ or ‘to be able to walk up a flight of stairs.’ Cancer takes a lot out of you, and the simplest things can become a huge challenge. That’s what the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program is meant to help with—to strengthen survivors and to help achieve their goals.”
Certified Summit Area YMCA trainers and staff guide cancer survivors in exercises that improve their physical strength, flexibility and endurance. The small group setting at the YMCA also helps participants connect and draw from a supportive network of those who have gone through similar life experiences. The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program helps survivors to become healthier and happier individuals. Each session lasts for 12 weeks, where participants and their families receive a free Y membership for full access to YMCA facilities, including KidZone childcare services. There are two 75 minute classes each week within a small group setting of 8-10 participants.
