Summit, NJ, April, 2018 – In 2016, Dr. Donald DeFabio of Chiropractic: Spine and Sports Rehab in Berkeley Heights suffered severe aorta damage in his heart. He was in intensive care for a month where he lost 15 pounds. After returning home, he was limited in what he could do. After learning about the free Healthy Hearts program with the Summit Area YMCA, Dr. DeFabio was able to strengthen his heart and learn more about his health. Hear him tell his story about his journey with the Healthy Hearts program and join him on his way to a healthier heart in mind and body https://www.thesay.org/doctorD
Like Dr. DeFabio you can improve your cardiovascular health thought the Summit Area YMCA Healthy Hearts & Cardia Maintenance Program offered at both our Berkeley Heights and Summit branches this Spring.
In Berkeley Heights, Healthy Hearts will begin on Tuesday, May 1st from 1:15PM – 2:30PM.
In Summit the session will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 – 1, from June 5th through August 23rd.
Anyone at risk for a cardiac event or anyone recovering from a cardiac event is welcome to participate. When you sign up for Healthy Hearts you will be making a commitment to your health, developing healthy habits with a focus on cardiovascular exercise. You will build muscle strength and flexibility in a non-medically supervised small-group setting.
If you are recovering from a cardiac event, completion of a phase 2 or 3 cardiac program is required. This program does not replace the critical role that medically supervised cardiac plays in recovery from a cardiac event. A Doctor’s release is required. Use of a fitness tracker is recommended. There is no fee for the Healthy Hearts program.
The program is directed by Nationally certified trainers and meets twice weekly for 12 weeks. Limit of 10 participants with 2 trainers present at each session. One session each week will utilize the cardio and strength equipment in the fitness center. The second session will be a group class that will focus on cardio exercise, strength and flexibility. There will be 4 assessments completed at the beginning and completion of the program to measure cardiovascular endurance, upper body and lower body strength and flexibility. Rate of Perceived Exertion and personal fitness trackers will be utilized to monitor participant’s exertion and heart rate.
