ANNUAL MOTHER’S DAY 5K RUN/WALK

On May 8, the Summit Area YMCA will hold its 15th Annual Mother’s Day 5K Run/Walk at Memorial Field, in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, hosted by the Berkeley Heights YMCA and The Learning Circle YMCA. As part of our mission to promote healthy living and to inspire caring for those members of our community who need help, the Summit Area YMCA works to provide programming and support to individuals of all ages and abilities. All our invited to participate in this race where proceeds from the chip-timed, USATF-sanctioned Grand Prix race benefits LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a free, small group, 12-week cancer survivor and recovery program.

“We are proud to partner with our sponsors like Celgene, Dun & Bradstreet, The Office Tavern & Grill, Med Express, and many more who have joined us to offer this meaningful and fun event,” said Paul Kieltyka, President and CEO of the Summit Area YMCA. “It gives the Y an opportunity to celebrate mothers for their amazing contributions while promoting wellness and raising funds to support cancer patients and survivors in our community.”

With LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, participants work on building muscle mass, strength, increasing flexibility, endurance, and improving functional ability. For Francesca, a Summit Area YMCA member and LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA participant, cancer left her feeling drained. “Being with other cancer survivors in the [program] made it less daunting to return to exercise. I liked that the group provides a supportive, upbeat environment. It empowered me to become more active and gain confidence that I could get my strength back in spirit, mind and body. And, I did. I am very grateful!”

Participants of the race can also “Friendraise” by reaching out to friends and family to raise funds for their run/walk and consequently support the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program, which is held at both the Berkeley Heights YMCA and Summit YMCA branches. Race participants who raise $75 by April 24 on their friendraising page get a free race registration.

“Being a marathon runner, cancer really set me back. As a result of being a part of the [program], I was able to regain my strength and endurance, and I was able to run the Summit Area YMCA’s Annual Mother’s Day 5K. I even got my wife and 9 year old son to join me as a way to give back and support the LIVESTRONG® program that helped me get back to myself,” said Paul, Summit Area YMCA member and LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA participant.

The Mother’s Day 5K is a family-friendly event that will also include a magic show, Zumba and music. Additionally, there will be a 50/50 Raffle, for which tickets can be purchased on-site or in advance at the Berkeley Heights YMCA, the Summit YMCA or The Learning Circle YMCA. Runners and walkers are welcome to participate in the race as individuals or as teams.

Join us and run or walk for health and wellness, for that better race time, for Mom on Mother’s Day, or in honor or in memory of a cancer survivor in your life. Whatever your reason may be, your participation and funds raised positively impact and allow cancer survivors to regain their total health.
