A Better You for a Better Us: New Jersey YMCAs Come Together to Build Community
Local YMCAs Hold Statewide Community Event on Jan. 9 to Promote Positive Personal Change and Improved Health
Summit Area YMCA/Summit, January 1, 2016 – Every January, nearly 70 percent of Americans make at least one New Year’s resolution, most of which include healthy lifestyle changes. Whatever you resolve to do in the upcoming year, the Y is here to help build a better you. For the second year, YMCAs across New Jersey have come together to host a statewide Open House, inviting individuals and families to visit the Y on January 9 and learn how to make a better you. This year’s open house event will be held at the Summit YMCA and the Berkeley Heights YMCA.
Creating personal change takes effort, active involvement, encouragement and support. Local YMCAs partner with individuals on their quest to achieve personal goals, providing programs and services that strengthen individuals and communities. Whether it’s becoming healthier, trying new activities, spending time with family, making new friends, or making a difference in your community, the Y is where building a better you, builds a better community.
To encourage individuals and families to make their resolutions a reality, Ys step in every day to give people a place to play, learn and be healthy. At the Summit Area YMCA, children in 2nd grade are able to learn to swim, for free, because we believe in the importance of safety and healthy living for kids in and around water. We offer a plethora of youth enrichment programs for parents and children to choose from, from arts and sciences, to culinary and dance, from sports leagues and clinics to tea parties and games. Teens have a place to hang out, volunteer, learn from role models, study and find routes to success in college preparation programs like the Achiever’s and the Leader’s Club. The Y is a place for people of all ages and walks of life, and we constantly strive to provide more ways for everyone to become their best selves.
“With the start of the new year, everyone resolves to improve. We help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives,” says Paul Kieltyka, President & CEO of the Summit Area YMCA. “Our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when neighbors come together for the common good.”
With their doors open to all, YMCA branches bring together people from all backgrounds to demonstrate the power of what can be achieved as a community. “When you’re a part of the Summit Area YMCA, you’re a member of a community that’s committed every day to helping you and your family, through programs focused on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. We’re proud to participate in another statewide event hosted by dozens of YMCAs to promote healthy change,” added Terri Clinton, Executive Director of the Summit YMCA.
New Jersey’s Ys are part of nearly 2,700 Ys across America joined together to make a greater impact in 10,000 communities. The Summit Area YMCA offers individuals, seniors and families a unique sense of community by providing a place to gather and support each other in a healthy, social environment. Because the Y is a nonprofit and believes everyone should have the resources to achieve health and wellness, financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
