Events for Everyone at The Summit Area YMCA on Martin Luther King, Jr. A Day of Justice, Equality and Service to Others!

Summit, NJ, January 2018 - For over 20 years, Martin Luther King, Jr. A Day of Justice, Equality and Service to Others (Monday, January 15, 2018) has encouraged individuals to volunteer their time to improve their communities. Now more than ever, that spirit of community service can help heal our differences through a common cause—giving back and strengthening the places where we live, work and play. The YMCA has always been more than just a swim and gym—We're an international organization fostering a sense of social responsibility with a mission to give back to our communities and their members.

In our busy day-to-day lives, volunteering can quickly take a back seat to other obligations and priorities. In fact, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, volunteering has seen a decline in the United States; only 24.9 percent of American adults volunteered in 2015, the lowest rate since the government began collecting this data 14 years ago. Our communities need volunteers to keep them strong. The less people volunteer, the more under served children, families and adults don’t get the help they need to lead productive and fulfilling lives!

Here at The Summit Area YMCA we’re encouraging people to get involved—in large or small ways—and make our local community better. We will be holding special events throughout the day at all three facilities, the Summit YMCA, the Berkeley Heights YMCA and The Learning Circle YMCA. Events are for all ages and open to everyone. They include:

A Child’s Helping Hands 10:00AM – 11:00AM
Join us at The Learning Circle YMCA to pack brown bag lunches for Bridges, an organization that serves the homeless in New York City, Newark, Irvington, and Summit. Registration at the door on 1/15/18 is mandatory.

Blankets for Cozies4Chemo 1:00PM – 3:00PM
Come to the Berkeley Heights YMCA to give back to others on Martin Luther King, Jr. A Day of Justice, Equality and Service to Others in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Volunteers can help prepare fleece blankets for children to assemble. Everyone is welcome to attend All Blankets will be donated to Cozies 4 Chemo.

Coat and Clothing Drive 2:00PM – 5:00PM
The Summit YMCA invites all to donate clothing such as coats, sweater, shirts, pants, sneakers and more. Teens will greet community members in the Teen Center to help collect and sort clothing. Clothing will be donated to a variety of different organizations.

Sign of the Times 3:00PM – 4:00PM
Join us in an activity focused on how the times have changed and/or stayed the same since the Civil Rights Era. It will be followed by a teen panel that will discuss and answer questions relating to issues in today's society from a teen perspective.
