LIVESTRONG® Cancer Recovery Program begins at the Berkeley Heights YMCA

Berkeley Heights, NJ, January 2018 – The Berkeley Heights YMCA is pleased to announce that a new LIVESTRONG® cancer recovery exercise program will begin on Tuesday January 23rd at 10:30 am. This free 12-week exercise program, open to the community, is designed for cancer survivors to help them rebuild cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, and range of motion in a small group setting. The course focuses on helping cancer survivors regain their total health -- mind, spirit and body -- through a supportive network of friends and neighbors. Participants also have the option to work with specially trained Y staff to customize the program to their individual needs.

Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The Y and LIVESTRONG® partnered to create a research-based physical and wellness program in which Summit Area YMCA staff work with participants to achieve their goals. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to return to normality. The Summit Area YMCA staff is trained in supportive cancer care and to work with participants in building muscle mass, strength, increasing flexibility, endurance, improving confidence, self-esteem and more.

“LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA helped me overcome my aversion to exercise and get back to being myself again. I loved being a part of the support group of women who like myself were impacted by cancer. The instructors were wonderful, motivating, knowledgeable and donated a lot of their time to helping us recover.” – Ann, Summit Area YMCA Member

The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program helps survivors become healthier and happier individuals. During the 12-week session, participants and their families receive a free Y membership for full access to YMCA facilities, including KidZone childcare services. There are two 75 minute classes each week within a small group setting of 8-10 participants.

The Summit Area YMCA is one of more than 115 YMCAs across the nation to have received funding from the LIVESTRONG® Foundation to deliver LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA to help cancer survivors achieve their holistic health and wellness goals. Since then our Summit YMCA and Berkeley Heights YMCA programs have been funded wholly through the generosity of our donors, sponsors and through grants from foundations. To date, our Summit YMCA and Berkeley Heights YMCAs have partnered to heal and help more than 100 cancer survivors and their families.
