The Summit Area YMCA is proud to announce that veterans and their families will be able to enjoy a free week of membership at both the Berkeley Heights YMCA and Summit YMCA branches during the week of November 5 through November 11. As one of the area’s leading non-profit charitable organizations, its mission and cause has been to provide quality programs to strengthen the community by nurturing the potential of youth development, motivating healthy living, and inspiring a sense of social responsibility among neighbors, including our honorable veterans.
Along with various types of memberships that allow for individuals of all ages to participate at the Y, the Summit Area YMCA also offers a Military Outreach Initiative to address the needs of families of deployed military personnel who live far from a military installation and require access to child development, family strengthening, and health and well-being programming. Eligible military families and personnel include active duty or deployed personnel of the Armed Services, their spouses and families.
The week will end with a free breakfast for veterans and their families in the Summit YMCA lobby on November 11. Following breakfast, special Guest Bob Max, a World War II prisoner of war will speak about his experience in a Nazi prison camp. Furthermore, the Summit YMCA will be a Holiday Community Partner with Soldiers’ Angels in collecting items and filling stockings to be given to deployed service members and veteran patients. Items (listed below) will be collected November 1 through November 17.
Youngsters in Kid Zone on Friday November 10th will be able to enjoy listening to the story “The Impossible Patriotism Project” read by special guests, followed by arts and crafts based on the story afterwards.
Similarly, the Berkeley Heights YMCA in partnership with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will be offering a free breakfast to veterans at the VFW location at 15 Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights.
