SUMMIT, NJ - Starting September 13, the Summit Area YMCA’s Youth Soccer Association (YSA) will be partnering with the Summit Soccer Club to provide volunteer coaches at the Y with professional skills training to enhance the skill development of young soccer players ages 3 years – 8 years. YSA is a noncompetitive, co-ed youth sports program designed to teach kids the basics of soccer while building confidence, developing team building skills, expending youthful energy in a positive way and celebrating the efforts of volunteer parents as coaches.
“The reason I signed my son Thomas up for YSA was because it was a good way to introduce him to the community he lives in.” said Monica Hug, mother of a YSA participant. “Since the Summit YMCA has a big presence in this community I couldn’t think of a better way for him to meet kids his age and have fun playing soccer.” The Summit Area YMCA believes in the importance of a strong community. For kids to grow up healthy in both body and mind, the Y provides a fun and safe neutral space for participants to interact and build lasting relationships between peers, coaches and families. Marci Ryvicker, YSA Soccer Coach added that “YSA is a great way to nurture my son’s love for soccer while maintaining close ties with other local families. As a working mom, I rarely have an opportunity to get this involved, and we are both so excited for the season to begin!”
Children ages 3 – 8 years old meet each week for recreation at local soccer fields, while games are held on Sundays so that busy parents are able to bond with their children on the weekends. For some, the YSA not only bonds families through tradition, but also provides social opportunities with other families. “I coach for the YMCA because I have played soccer for many years and my mom was my first coach,” says Caroline Doyle, YSA soccer coach. “The YMCA provides me with the opportunity to continue that tradition with my children and share my love of the sport with other young athletes.”
The fee to register is $165 for YMCA Members and $248 for Community Members. Registration begins August 3. Teams are formed when Coaches submit rosters. If players want to be on a specific team, they must contact coaches directly, otherwise players will be assigned to teams by the Summit YMCA. To participate, players must have a red and black jersey, which can be purchased at the Summit YMCA Front Desk.
