Are you looking for a captivating, educational, and mind-enriching activity for your children this summer? Then the Summit Area YMCA Chess Programs are exactly what you need! We've specifically designed two brilliant chess programs for beginners and advanced players, set in two of our exceptional locations - the serene Camp Cannundus at Watchung Reservation, and the vibrant Springfield Community Pool.
Our Beginner Chess Program is not merely about teaching the basics of the royal game. It's a comprehensive course that harmoniously merges learning with fun, ensuring that your child is immersed in an environment that fosters cognitive development, problem-solving skills, and strategic thinking. By the end of this program, not only will your child know the difference between a bishop and a knight, but they will also be equipped with a solid foundation in chess that paves the way for a lifelong journey of intellectual growth and pure enjoyment.
But the adventure doesn't stop at the beginner level! For children with a flair for advanced strategies, we have our Advanced Chess Program. This program is crafted to push the boundaries of their chess knowledge. Participants will be diving deep into advanced chess concepts, analyzing games played by chess masters, and engaging in intense gameplay. This immersive experience will undoubtedly hone their skills, enhance strategic thinking, and build the confidence to compete at higher levels.
So why wait? Let's turn your child's summer into a checkmate season! Our classes are held every Tuesday at Camp Cannundus and Wednesdays at Springfield Community Park from 7/11-8/22.
Come, join us on this exciting journey of chess mastery at the Summit Area YMCA! You'll soon discover that every pawn move, every bishop slide, and every king's gambit is a step towards building lifelong skills and friendships. Checkmate!

We are committed to creating equal opportunity for all regardless of gender, age, disability, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religious affiliation. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in which our four core values — responsibility, honesty, caring and respect — are integral to everyday operations.
Each year, as one of the area’s leading 501(c)3 charitable organizations, the Summit Area YMCA serves more than 15,000 individuals with our free and fee-based programs and services in an area spanning the New Jersey communities of Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Millburn, New Providence, Short Hills, Springfield, Stirling and Summit. Our history is rooted in working side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through the generosity of our members, donors, and partners, we are able to offer financial assistance for our programs and services to those in need.
