The Summit YMCA offers engaging programs to help youth discover and explore their interests and talents. We believe in the potential of every child and our programs are built to help then learn, grow and thrive in a safe, nurturing environment.

7th Grade Membership

We want to support and encourage kids to make good decisions and form healthy habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle. The 7th Grade Initiative program provides opportunities for fitness and sports, as well as an opportunity to socialize with peers in a safe, supervised and conveniently located environment. This special free membership available only to 7th graders demonstrates our commitment and philosophy for a well-rounded approach to the healthy development of the whole person.

It’s Easy to Get Started Please bring the following to the Y to activate your membership.
1. Your school ID, roster or report card
2. A parent or guardian
3. Sign a Code of Conduct
4. Complete a few quick forms and begin your membership right away!

 

 

 

 

 


We demonstrate to each Seventh Grader how to use gym equipment. Demonstrations are approximately one hour long and must be scheduled in advance. Demos focus on safety and proper technique. Once all demos are completed, 7th graders will have a full access membership to the Y. There is a limit of one student per demonstration time slot at the Summit YMCA. Only one demo per day per 7th grader.

Special Events
Each month 7th graders will have a special event just for them.

Achievers Program for High School Students

A career and college preparation program for area students in grades 8-12. Meetings are held once a week from 7:00pm-8:00pm. Participants are given opportunities to attend college tours, corporate mentoring, career clusters and more!

DANCE (AGES 3 TO 10 YEARS)

  • ZUMBATONIC (AGES 7 TO 12 YEARS)

    Designed exclusively for kids, Zumbatonic classes are rockin’, high-energy fitness parties packed with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all music kids love. Zumbatonic rounds out family fitness goals by giving parents a great reason to head to the Y - for themselves, for their kids, for a totally fun family experience.

HEAT - Group Exercise and Nutrition for Teens

Parent Child Enrichment Classes (ages 1 to 4 years)

  • WIGGLE, GIGGLE, RHYME (AGES 1 TO 5 YEARS)

    Toddler with parent/caregiver have fun wiggling, giggling, and making new friends. Activities include free play in the gym, circle time, story/snack and weekly themed art project. Drinks will not be provided. If your child uses a sippy cup, please bring it.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • TODDLER OPEN GYM (AGES 1 TO 6 YEARS)

    Does your child need some space to be active? Individuals and groups are welcome to stay and play! Then bring them to the Summit gymnasium to burn off some excess energy as you connect with other parents/guardians and their children in a safe, matted area where your kids can crawl, jump and have fun! We have hoopla hoops, balls and other toys for them to enjoy which will vary each week. (FREE to members who sign up for any, one youth enrichment summer class at either Summit or Berkeley Heights during Summer 1 or Summer 2 sessions). Classes will not be held on 7/10 or 8/7.

Preschool and Youth Enrichment (ages 2 to 7 years)

  • KITCHEN ART (AGES 2 TO 5 YEARS)

    Peel, chop, squish, squeeze or roll as you create and take home edible, beautiful art with foods you like to eat. Children are encouraged to wear their aprons to class. Class activity may be messy.

  • STARS ON STAGE (AGES 3 TO 5 YEARS)
    If your child loves the stage, adores a good story or needs help developing confidence - this is the class for them! Through improvisational exercises, team, and monologue work, children receive interactive educational experiences that they will love! Emphasis is placed on following directions, teamwork, basic stage movement and presence. Nut-free, brown bag snacks are welcome.

    Classes are 1 hour long.


  • CHEMICAL REACTIONS (AGES 3 TO 5 YEARS)

    Children will explore and experiment in this hands-on-science class. From making “goop” to erupting volcanoes, your child will practice their observation skills, measuring, sorting, and learn basic chemical reactions ~ creativity welcomed!

  • COOKING UP A STORY (AGES 2 TO 5 YEARS)

    Give a Mouse a Muf¾n, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Eating the Alphabet are just some of the stories that will lead us on our food adventure to fun and creative recipes with a healthy twist using food choices that follow the story line of each of the books we read. Come join us for this fun food and reading adventure.

School Age Enrichment (Ages 5 to 12 years)

  • KNITTING FOR KIDS (AGES 7 TO 12 YEARS)

    Get started in the popular craft of knitting! Learn how needles and yarn together make loops that become fabric.   Learn about the difference between knit and woven fabrics, and why knitting is so important to our comfort.  Learn to hold the yarn, cast on, knit and bind off.  Learn how to read knitting patterns.  We will work on a change purse, small pillows and toy stuffed animals, and start projects that can be completed at home.

  • CHESS FOR EVERYONE (AGES 6 TO 12 YEARS)

    This class is for all levels of chess players. With a certi¾ed chess trainer, beginners will learn basic strategies and moves, and advanced players will be challenged by their peers and instructors. Workbooks, puzzles, and materials are all included. This is a great class for the chess lover in all of us.

  • FAIRY TALE FITNESS (AGES 4 TO 6 YEARS)

    Fairy Tale Fitness is a new fun ¾tness program designed just for kids! We focus on building core strength, balance, coordination, confidence, and fun. Children will experience flying with carpets, walking over “rivers” and finding out whether slow and steady really wins the race.

  • DRAGONS, FAIRIES, AND PRINCESSES (AGES 4 TO 6 YEARS)

    Children will let their imaginations soar in this magical fairy tale-themed arts and crafts class! Participants make dragon and fairy wings, prince and princess crowns, wands, jewels, fairy tale puppets, costumes and more.

Teen and Pre-Teen Fitness | Teen Open Gym

  • GIRLS ON THE RUN NJ

    For girls in Grades 3 to 5. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running. The program runs 10 weeks. Participants meet two times a week for one 1 hour and 15 minutes.

    Program meets:
    Mon and Thursday, 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Memorial Track, Summit
    Tuesday, 4:00-5:15 pm, and Saturday, 9:30-10:45 am, Columbia Park, Berkeley Heights.

  • PRE-TEEN GROUP FITNESS TRAINING (AGES 11 TO 12 YEARS)

    Small group fitness training under the guidance of a certified personal trainer. The participants will be shown how to exercise correctly and how to structure a well rounded fitness program. Each meeting will include a cardiovascular workout, strength training and flexibility training. Class meets twice a week.

    Fee:  $150 for a monthly session.

  • TEEN OPEN GYM
    We welcome teen members age 12 through age 19 (must be 12 years old and in 7th grade), on Wednesday nights from 6:45 pm to 8:30 pm. 

    All teen members must sign in and get a valid wrist band (for that day) at Member Services. Teen members may invite 1 teen guest, as long as that guest has completed a Guest Form signed by his/her parent/guardian. Sneakers must be worn be worn by all participants.

    All teen members and their guests are requested to follow our Code of Conduct. Participants are expected to take car of YMCA equipment and property and respect the Gym Supervisor who enforces all schedules and rules. Note, we do not tolerate foul or indecent language at our facility.

    Teen Membership Fee: $39 per month

Teen Programs

  • LEADERS CLUB (AGES 13 TO 17 YEARS)

    Teen Led, Teen Driven - Leaders Club is a national Y volunteer program for teens in grades 7-12 that focuses on community service, social development, leadership training, team building, and FUN! Leaders Club is run by teens and overseen by a Y staff member. Earn volunteer hours while using your ideas, strengths, and interests to make a difference. In Leaders’ Club, you develop projects and create opportunities to make an impact on the community & live a healthier, more active lifestyle. Also included weekend rallies with Leader’s Club from other YMCAs in the area.
