Darrell’s Y Story: “I started in 1976 with the PA State YMCA as a seasonal director of a Youth Conservation Corps Camp, and have been committed to empowering young people to change the world ever since. During my tenure as CEO of the New Orleans Y after Hurricane Katrina, my faith in the YMCA movement was powerfully reinforced through the assistance we received from Ys around the world. The most meaningful offer of emergency funding came from Haiti, one of the poorest countries in our hemisphere. We couldn’t take their money but they won our hearts.”

Emily’s Y Story: “I chose to work at the Y because I wanted to give back to the community by working at a non profit organization. As a single mom with three adolescent children, I knew my kids would benefit from my association with an organization dedicated to developing youth. All three of my kids have worked at the Y — how wonderful knowing that their first working experiences would be at an employer concerned about their development. The Y has helped me raise philanthropic young adults who continue to give back to the community. I feel great knowing that my work is helping others.”

Janet’s Y Story: “My local Y was a support to me when I needed a comfortable place to belong. In addition, I worked out in the fitness area and achieved both mental and physical rehab!”

After the birth of my second child, I stopped working full time and soon thereafter moved to Summit from New York City. It was at the Y that I first found community in Summit. In addition to meeting new people and making friends, the Y offered a welcoming environment to help me stay healthy and in shape. Since then, my children have been enrolled in numerous swim and sports clinics, played Youth Soccer and Basketball (with my husband as coach), enjoyed summer day camp, and celebrated birthday parties at the Y. I love that the Y is literally and figuratively the center of our community and that its mission for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility so closely aligns with many of the things I consider important.

When I was a little girl, my family used to drive by the local YMCA and I would look through the glass windows into the pool and longingly watch children and families smiling and laughing. I knew that one day I wanted that for my family – a place to belong. Fortunately, after having my first child, I located a top-notch YMCA childcare facility that provided a safe environment, quality programming, trained staff and a well-maintained facility that gave me the peace and assurance that my child was safe, happy and loved. My relationship with the Y continued to grow through the friendships that I developed with other parents in that Y community. Not having any family of my own on the East Coast, my Y friends became my family – inviting me and my children to share holidays and to join them in making special memories. For the past 12 years, my sons and I have developed some very special Y holiday traditions – from spending every Christmas Eve at our local YMCA to spending every Martin Luther King weekend at Frost Valley YMCA. We treasure the memories that we’ve made and will be forever grateful to our Y family for welcoming us, giving us a second home, and a place to belong.
