  • Adventure Guides Program Coordinator

    Part Time

    The Adventure Guides Program Coordinator manages the operations and activities of the Adventure Guides program. The position works independently and is responsible for the recruitment of volunteers and participants, as well as the overall planning and administration of the Adventure Guides program.

    Essential Functions:

    • Recruits and manages program volunteers including Navigators and Adventure Guides participants
    • Actively establish contacts and visits to market program at pre-schools and other youth oriented organizations to recruit 4-9 year old participants and their fathers.
    • ans, manages and communicates the yearly calendar of events to include campouts, activity meetings, outings and other parent-child events
    • Builds relationships with various camp locations and serves as the liaison between SAY Campers and the Camp location to assure problem solving and conflict resolution
    • Attends Adventure Guides functions and campouts to provide supervision and adventure expertise
    • Assures that Adventure Guide participants follow YMCA child and adult safely practices and policies
    • Works with volunteers to create and implement community service projects
    • Creates new programs such as Adventure Guide Moms and Trailblazers, as needed
    • Prepares, administers and monitors online registration for all events throughout the year
    • Independently administers day-to-day program activities: creating and distributing flyers, collecting payments, creating circles, distributing information and materials
    • Manages financial aspect of program including budget planning and monitoring
    • Creates rosters for events, assigns sleeping arrangements, when needed, and orders and distributes program materials
    • Works with volunteers to develop campout ceremonies and program regalia.
    • Attends camp meetings and various other Adventure events
    • Cultivates and establishes relationships with potential and current members
    • Responds to member/participant questions and concerns
    • Is responsible for complying with all Summit Area YMCA policies and procedures
    • Attends trainings, seminars and meetings, as required
    • Assists in other duties as requested by supervising director
    • Supports organization-wide events as needed
    • Wears appropriate uniform/attire.
    • As an Ambassador for the Y, communicates to members, volunteers, and the general public that the Y is the nation’s leading non-profit committed to strengthening the community through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
    • Demonstrates the Y’s values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

    Qualifications:

    • A minimum of an Associate’s Degree or equivalent in education and experience.
    • A minimum of 3 years of experience in customer service and administration experience.
    • Work time flexibility for some evening and weekend work.
    • Experience working with volunteers and supervising others preferred.
    • Self-starter who is comfortable working independently.
    • Strong communication and organizational skills.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft office (Word/Excel) and good administrative skills.
    • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or obtain within 60 days of hire.
    • Other training as required by the SAY.

  • Basketball Referee

    Summit YMCA is seeking part time Basketball Referee for Travel Basketball season.  Seasonal Dec- March. Approximately 5 hours a week, Thursday and Saturday evenings. 

    Responsibilities:

    -Officiates basketball games as assigned and enforces the rules of play
    -Ability to see play with sufficient clarity and make accurate decisions
    -Communicates with coaches, players, sponsors, and fans to maintain order
    -Sits, stands, bends, stoops, reaches, walks, and jogs intermittently

    Requirements:
    Must present certification from a nationally recognized organization upon hiring.
    Track record of officiating in a fair and honest matter 
    Past experience as a basketball referee for adult basketball leagues
    Must be in excellent physical condition- able to run up and down a regulation sized basketball court for the entire quarter/half
    A high level of superior independent judgment when making calls
    Must be at least 21 years old

    Compensation: $40 per game.

    The Summit YMCA seeks a full time Director of Youth and Teens Program  to provide leadership and supervision of the Association's youth and teen programs.   Responsibilities include staff supervision, fiscal management, program development and management, community development, and relationship building.  Program areas include Y Achievers, Teen Center, Middle School programs, and youth leadership programs, with room for new initiatives.

    Required qualifications include:

    Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and minimum of 2 years' experience managing youth and teens programs
    Demonstrated experience in outreach and working with diverse populations
    One or more years supervisory and budget experience

  • Gym Supervisor-

    Part Time

    The Gym Supervisor is responsible for managing all aspects of the Hubbard Gymnasium, inclusive of sports equipment, sports scheduling, supervising activities, character development (gym etiquette and sportsmanship), and safety and security of the YMCA facility and members.

    Primary duties of this position include:

    Supervise set-up and break down of equipment. (raise/lower dividing curtain, set-up/take down volleyball net, raise/lower basketball goals, etc…)
    Properly store, maintain, and secure sports equipment (before and after) gym time.
    Ensures set up, clean up and put away of facility and equipment before and after programs.
    Supervises games and activities to ensure they are played according to the gym rules as well as the YMCA standards and values.
    Keep Sports closet and equipment secure, clean, and in order.
    Attends any scheduled staff meetings or training.
    Manages any unsportsmanlike conduct by members.
    Keeps daily summaries and facility usage, using appropriate forms. Communicates with Sports Director on a weekly basis.
    Ensures that gymnasium is in order before leaving (equipment secured, baskets raised to official heights, etc…) and gym schedules and gym signs are updated and posted.
    Assists sports instructors whenever necessary to maintain credibility and consistency of sports programs.
    Assists with special events whenever necessary.
    Notifies the Sports Director of schedule problems with sufficient notice. Ensures shift coverage when schedules change.
    Keeps Sports Director informed of all first aid issues, discipline or other significant problems.
    Records and reports all incidents / accidents on the official incident report form.

    Qualifications
    1. A high school diploma or its equivalency. :
    2. Experience and familiarity with gymnasium and equipment
    3. Experience working with children and/or adults is preferred.

  • Kid Zone Staff

    Part Time

    The Kid Zone Staff member provides a quality drop-in babysitting program for members and participants 6 weeks to 10 years old.

    Essential Functions:

    1. Set-up room and provide a safe and clean environment for children in the babysitting area.
    2. Maintain toys and supplies and remove any supplies that are unsafe for children. 
    3. Report any equipment concerns to the appropriate director.
    4. Greet all parents and children who enter the room.
    5. Ensure child is signed in and out of program.  Punch card or receive money for children not on a family membership.
    6. Supervise and be attentive to the needs of all children in the room.
    7. Plan and participate in activities with children at an appropriate level.
    8. Follow all policies and procedures set by the Y, including those regarding Child Abuse Prevention and Blood Borne Pathogens.
    9. Respond to member concerns/complaints in a professional manner.
    10. Handle emergencies in a calm, appropriate manner.  Complete “Incident Reports” as required.
    11. Adhere to all standards outlined in the “Employee Handbook.”
    12. Attend staff meetings and other trainings as required.
    13. Perform any other appropriate duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with children and adults.
    • Experience working with children.
    • CPR and First Aid certifications strongly recommended.

    Part Time Day Shifts Available

    Essential Functions:

    • Maintains constant surveillance of the water, deck and pool areas at all times.  Actively scans the pool to achieve a 10 x 10 reaction time.
    • Knows, understands and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
    • Maintains a professional attitude and appearance.
    • Be on time and in proper uniform/equipment for each shift.
    • Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
    • Give 100% attention to the patrons and operation of the pool area.  Be alert, vigilant and conscientious.
    • Maintain current certifications (Lifeguard, CPR-PR, First-Aid)
    • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Y policies and procedures.   Completes related reports as required.  
    • Knows all Aquatic Department policies and procedures and adheres to them.
    • Helps in maintaining pool area, including testing (chlorine and pH readings), cleaning, equipment and chemicals and completes all appropriate forms (accident report, fecal/vomitus report) thoroughly and legibly and in a timely manner.
    • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
    • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.

    Qualifications:

    • Must have a current certificate in YMCA, BSA, American Red Cross Lifeguard, Professional Rescuer CPR/AED and First Aid.  Must attend and pass certification classes offered for Emergency Oxygen Administration, Asthma Inhaler and Epi-Pen Administration within 6 months of hire.  Must be a minimum of 15 years old.  FREE Y MEMBERSHIP!

  • Rock Wall Climber

    Experience required

    The Summit YMCA is seek an experienced rock wall climber to supervise and instruct students of all ages on our 500 square foot rock wall on Saturdays. Additional hours available on an as needed basis

     Responsibilities

    • Monitor rock wall area to ensure safety of climbers and rock wall area while providing excellent customer service and climbing instructions to all levels of climbers
    • Assist and belay climbers
    • Supervise all participants on the wall to ensure safety procedures are adhered, maintain member files and waiver forms, and submit accident/incident reports to the Sports Director.
    • Encourage members to step outside of their fitness comfort zone by explaining and demonstrating climbing equipment and methods.
    • Participate in volunteer activities throughout the year.

     Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • 6 months to 1 year climbing experience.
    • Belay certification preferred but not required.

  • Sports Coordinator

    Part Time (Approx. 15 hours per week)

    The Summit Area Y is seeking a qualified individual who will primarily be responsible for the administration and the day-to-day supervision of various sports programs, including weekend leagues and evening classes. The Sports Coordinator will also be responsible for teaching classes when necessary. S/he will work with the Sports Director to develop and maintain high quality programs, while providing a safe, fun, friendly and well-rounded learning environment for the participants.

    Essential Functions:

    • Provide leadership to all sports leagues including the Youth Basketball League, Youth Soccer Association and any future leagues that are established.
    • Supervise sports program staff to ensure high quality instruction.
    • Assist and enforce lesson plan development to ensure high quality instruction.
    • Build relationships and communicate with parents.
    • Keep daily attendance records for all classes.
    • Maintain data management and reporting as it relates to sports programs.
    • Execute marketing strategies to help maximize enrollment.
    • Properly set up, clean up, and maintain all equipment.
    • Supervise children during games/activities to ensure safety.
    • Teach rules and strategies of the game/activity.
    • Incorporate physical fitness, stretching, nutrition, and exercise in every class.
    • Use positive behavior management to encourage participants to act properly.
    • Keep the Sports Director informed of all first aid concerns, discipline or other significant problems.
    • Record and report all incidents to the Sports Director immediately.  

    Qualifications:

    • A Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent.
    • One to two years related experience preferred.
    • Experience working with children
    • Previous experience in specialized sports, fitness, exercise, fitness areas, and/or teaching background preferred.

    • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred or the ability to obtain a CDL within one year.

    • Instructs swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
    • Develops positive relationships with members and participants and provides motivational support and guidance.

    Qualifications:

    Must have YMCA/American Red Cross Lifeguard or YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant Certification.     • Plan and prepare activities that reflect an engaging and youth-centered program curriculum, leading to skill development for participants.
    • Develop schedules that incorporate student interests, required curricula and timeframes, and insure their accurate implantation.
    • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of participants in the program by providing close supervision of all activities.
    • Develop positive relationships with the participants, their friends and family members.
    • Instruct and mentor teen participants.
    • Actively participate in all trainings sessions, designated meetings and special events.

     

    Qualifications

    1. High School Diploma is required. College Degree preferred with coursework in education, social or human services, child development or related field is highly desirable.
    2. 2 or more years’ experience working in an after-school, day camp or community youth outreach setting is preferred.
    3. Experience creating lesson plans for middle and high school students.
    4. Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact with parents and teens.  
    5. Ability to obtain CPR/AED Certification within 90 days.

    The Berkeley Heights Y is looking for customer service driven, multi-tasking individuals to work at the Member Service Desk.  Computer knowledge, a great attitude, outgoing personality and a big smile are a must! 

    Responsibilities include: greeting members by name, answering phones, giving tours, being able to learn and retain all aspects of our vast membership and program information, and all aspects of member service. 

    The Y is specifically looking for someone to work the following shifts:
    Mondays & Tuesdays:
    5:10 am- 9:00 am*
    Sundays shifts available:

    7:00 am – 12 pm

    12 pm – 5 pm
    *Sept-November only.  Other shifts available as needed.

    Candidates must be available to work on a year round basis.

  • Lead Preschool Teacher

    Full Time Position

    Lead Preschool Teacher – The Learning Circle YMCA, Summit, NJ

    Essential functions

    1. Prepare, develop, and implement developmentally appropriate program, in accordance with the Y’s philosophy and curriculum.
    2. Participate in monitoring/ maintaining classroom equipment and materials.  Makes recommendations for ordering supplies and makes safety needs known to the Safety Committee.

      Collaborate as a team member with all classroom staff through effective communication and group planning.  Assume responsibility for planning, tracking and parent communication.

    3. Respond to parents concerns and keep families informed regarding their children’s progress.
    4. Responsible for the children’s safety, ensuring constant active supervision of the group at all times.
    5. Monitor and document health and safety concerns, including reporting injuries.
    6. Orient and supervise other teachers assigned to the classroom.
    7. Participate in agency-wide trainings, staff meetings, and complete the required training hours.
    8. Organize, clean, and maintain the classroom.  Participates in team effort in maintaining common areas.


    Qualifications:

    A minimum of  a college degree in education and 1 year classroom experience.  
    Monday thru Friday with flexible hours between 7am-6pm.

  • Music Teacher

    Part Time

    The Learning Circle YMCA seeks a Music Teacher to work in the early childhood center with four classes of children ages 3 years to 5 years.   The hours are 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., (1/2 hour each class) on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  The Teacher is required to sing with children for the purpose of teaching them basic musical concepts.  Playing an instrument is a plus.  Some musical performances for parents are expected.

    The Learning Circle YMCA seeks a part-time Center Teacher (Floater) for the Toddler Program (aged 1 1/2 to 2 1/2), 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  
    At least 1 year experience in a licensed child care center is required. 
    Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma.
